In 2012, the Bovanenkovsky oil and gas industrial complex came into operation in the very heart of the Yamal Peninsula. Indigenous reindeer herding tribes pass through this industrial zone, as it is the only route to the summer pastures and the Kara Sea. This is the story of people whose fates are closely tied to the lands where they live and to the traditions of their ancestors, but their future and even their present is becoming increasingly fragile and uncertain with the advent of civilization.

True Stories and Tales

The film is based on the eponymous cycle of short stories by the writer Fyodor Abramov. The screenplay is based on six stories that seem like fiction, but in reality, they actually happened. By the way, it was this epigraph that Fyodor Abramov himself gave to his miniature stories. Each story is a reflection of Russian life. The characters in Abramov’s cycle leave their villages, discuss drunkenness and the super‑weapon that the Americans are about to invent, wonder why there are so many officials but no one wants to work, and are surprised by the absence of unemployment in the USSR and the poor quality of the service sector. These stories made me want to compare them with today’s world and ask myself: “Isn’t it the same today?” and “What has changed in people’s lives?”
“Songs of the North” is a documentary film about the fate and folklore heritage of the Russian North. Folk traditions here are closely intertwined with the tragic events of the 20th century. Dekulakization, collectivization, collective farms, war, famine, death… and at the same time, an incredible desire to live.

To get to the farm, you need to cross a rather fast mountain river by boat. In short, he’s gone off the grid. This short film tells how Stas lives, why he decided to change his lifestyle, and about his worldview. An ideologically driven person is always interesting in Mother Russia!
